Egg Spring 1995 – 31 May 2014
19 years is an awfully long time with a large lizard, lots of fun and games, lots of laughter, a little pain, fewer tears. Whilst friends and family have come and gone, Egg always seemed a constant... to the point I almost took him for granted. I hope he enjoyed his life, I certainly enjoyed having him in mine. Even though I knew he was getting near to his end, when he died on Saturday I numbly walked on the nearby cliffs and cried like a baby.
Having had a few long and memorable car journeys during his life, on Sunday we took him on his last. To get him cremated. After all these years it would feel strange to not have him around, albeit in a different form. I'm sure as long as I have the little box of his remains I'll still have those long one sided conversations we always used to have. He certainly was a good listener, seemingly attentive, always keeping his own counsel.
For all the vegetables I've prepared, water I've sprayed, lightbulbs I've changed and electricity bills I've paid, I'd do it all again to have him around at his best for one evening. As much as I'd like to believe we'll meet again I know we won't, memories are the only immortality any of us have.
